The top five remained the same from our March Rankings, with the two franchise players, Eichel and McDavid ranked #1 and 2 followed by Noah Hanifin, Mitchell Marner and Ivan Provorov – two defensive anchors who can skate and score along with the gifted Marner. A small amount of shuffling amongst the remaining top ten with Pavel Zacha and Lawson Crouse effectively switching places. One of the biggest movers from number 29 to number 17 was big Russian goalie Ilya Samsonov after turning in a strong performance at the U18 World Junior Championship and being named best goaltender in the tournament. Another Russian, sniper Denis Guryanov also put together a strong tournament, flashing moments of elite execution, and firing six goals in five games (5-6-1-7). Noah Juulsen quietly rose 21 spots from #41 to #20 after solid two-way play all season, displaying a good hockey IQ and finishing second amongst WHL draft-eligible defenceman behind Provorov in scoring (68-9-43-52). Two defencemen previously in the top 30 that tumbled down the rankings from March were Brandon Carlo and Oliver Kylington. Carlo, the 6'5" 200 pound defenceman needs to utilize his frame better and more aggressively and Kylington skates well but his judgement and game sense come into question with too many mental lapses and turnovers.
